Résumé

This paper aims to explore the historical processes of exogenous social organizing in rural Angola leading up to the unprecedented involvement of a network of civil society actors known as Rede Terra (Land Network) during the legislative process of the latest land law of 2004, while highlighting the influences that Mozambique’s previous similar experience of Campanha Terra (Land Campaign) had on its Angolan counterparts. Through fieldwork conducted in both countries, the research is supported by unpublished material documenting the events alongside personal interviews with actors directly involved. The study finds that this period was indeed pioneering both in the collaborative opening with otherwise authoritarian governments regarding land law legislation and the national character of the respective social mobilization efforts.
